THIS IS A VIDME EXCLUSIVE ONLY BY REQUEST OF THE ARTIST. OMFG WHAT A BAND!!!!
Schnellertollermeier - 17th March 2016
Next up was ShnellerTollerMeier the headline act on tour from Switzerland. Having played at Number 39 previously, the trio declared that they were looking forward to their return to the Bridge Street venue. The band consist of-
Andi Schnellmann: bass
Manuel Troller: guitar
David Meier: drums
They describe themselves as "Half way between free improvisation, hardcore jazz and brute rock. Their style defies genre boundaries with instrumental power. This young trio sounds like classic literature, where you have to keep on re-reading a sentence until you understand. But when you have finally understood, you understand a lot more..."
What this description does not mention is the sublime beauty and complexity of the soundscapes created to take the listener on a fascinating journey into the depths of whatever is in your head at the time of listening! ...and what was in it before ....would certainly not be in it after watching a ShnellerTollerMeier show! The absence of shamrock topped Guinness, foam top hats and Irish stew went completely unnoticed as the venue was once again silenced into watching something completely new for the second time in the evening. "Soft Machine" one customer exclaimed, "Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii" was another accurate description of the 'ambient soundscapes' which dominated the set. One problem that I have with the term 'ambient soundscapes' is that without a pulse running through the music I often get bored after a short time......ShnellerTollerMeier simply oozed rhythm throughout. The lively moments were exactly that....uncompromising and tense before the next passage of rhythmic beauty.
The band play Leeds this evening and then Manchester on Saturday before heading off back home to Switzerland. If you are able to get to one of these gigs then you will not regret it! Best gig of the year so far!
