29-year-old Marianne Barnes is Kentucky’s first female master distiller since Prohibition. As a chemical engineering undergraduate at the University of Louisville, she stumbled upon the region’s sacred craft. In short order, she secured a highly selective co-op with Brown-Forman and was placed in the storied research and development lab, working under the watchful eye of Woodford’s master distiller Chris Morris. Now a master distiller herself with recognition in the Forbes Food & Wine 30 Under 30, she works in a castle with over a century of distilling history, developing Kentucky bourbon for Castle & Key.
In a 60 Second Docs+ extended episode, we uncover what it’s like to be a woman in the male-dominated field of bourbon making. What’s your drink of choice?
