I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game reviews are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. Let's try out those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...
Developer(s) Beam Software
Genre(s) Action RPG
Shadowrun is a cyberpunk RPG that takes place in a future where magic has awoken. Hence, you're equally likely to run into a cybernetically enhanced elf as you are a buffed out Orc sporting a submachinegun or a techno-mage. If this concept sounds awesome to you don't worry, it's supposed to.
Shadowrun itself was a huge RPG franchise for the FASA corporation (makers of Battletech FYI). The SNES version of this game was an action RPG that contained an amnesia-driven plot revolving around a character who was left for dead in the opening montage. After waking up at and escaping from the morgue, the main character Jake ends up exploring the dystopian future around him, killing many random henchmen, developing his weapon and hacking skills, meeting useful allies, and ultimately trying to solve the mystery of his own murder.
As far as gameplay goes, Shadowrun is relatively simple, yet remarkably fun. The setting and story really give this game a terrific cyberpunk feel, and there is a nice mix of killing enemies, exploring new locales, item-based puzzle solving, and conversations with NPCs.
All in all, I had a lot of fun with Shadowrun, and while the game is a bit limited in its control scheme due to being on the SNES, it nonetheless is a great game. For any RPG fan out there, this is a retro game worth playing!
➙ Must You Play It?
A cyberpunk RPG that doesn't fail to deliver a great story and great gameplay in a dark, dystopian future. Any RPG fan out there should have a lot of fun with this one. A game worth trying!
