Video description:

Cephalopod vision has always been a mystery to scientists. In spite of being colourblind, their behaviour shows they are able to distinguish colour, and this is due to the shape of their pupils. These findings were made by Stubbs & Stubbs, 2015, who discovered that the U or W-shaped pupil, gave cuttlefish, octopus and squid eyes a unique way of diffracting light and detecting colour. This is a video-adapted version of my winning talk in the FameLab Heats 2016 in Oxford, and content for #CephalopodWeek.
