"If you did decide to leave in dignity, and with your weapons, to Idlib or anywhere you wanted to go, I personally am ready physically to accompany you." - United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, addressing himself to Al-Nusra fighters in eastern Aleppo.
Speaking to the UN Geneva press corps, Mr. de Mistura said that the writing was on the wall for the people of eastern Aleppo in Syria unless Al Nusra fighters leave and Syria and Russia stop an aerial bombing campaign that threatens to destroy the city.
The UN Special Envoy also challenged Russian authorities and the Government of Syria to be accountable to world public opinion, and to history's judgement, for their military campaign.
“There is only one thing that we are not ready to do: be passive, resign ourselves to another Srebrenica, another Rwanda.”
