A look back at one of the long forgotten First Person Shooters from the mid 90's.
PO'ed was developed by Any Channel and published by Accolade, making it's ballsy debut in November 6, 1995 on the ludicrously overpriced Panasonic 3DO system. The game was ported onto Sony's blockbuster original Plastation system the following year.
PO'ed is a FPS game, that will take you back to simpler times where this genre was'nt taking itself as serious as it is now.
The player assumes the role of Ox, a chef who's ship, The Pompous was boarded by intergalactic assholes (literally) and crashed on their planet of operations. And what a diverse planet it is
One thing PO'ed has going for it is variety. Each level looks different, besides a few recurring ones (The Pompous is revisited 3 times) there's nothing else really like it out there, even today. There's canyons, islands, caves, sky fortresses, bathrooms, you name it.
Most maps are just large battlefields, with an onslaught of enemies to gun down, similar to the Serious Sam games. The enemies, need to be seen to be believed, walking asses, giant robots, organic tanks, you just have to play it, or better yet watch my review to get a better understanding!
The controls kinda blow, but it was pre-analog stick days, so after a few levels you get used to it. Interesting factoid, Any Channel were working on a sequel to be released on the PS1, and would have included 2-Player co-op and Deathmatches via 'system link'. Remember those old days?
Unfortunately the sequel was canceled eventually, but some of us 'Strange' gamers still remember. If you ever see it out and about, pick it up! There's no other FPS out today quite like it! Which is mostly a good thing hehe.
