Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) was a Dutch painter who trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, and afterward spent his life in England. His paintings often depict the luxury and decadence of figures in classical antiquity. The perfectionist painter was incredibly detailed with his work. He was one of the most financially successful artists of his era, with an incredible amount of amazing paintings completed in his lifetime (there is a video with even more paintings after the gallery below), though he slowed down toward the end as his health decreased. However, after his death his work fell out of favor as new styles, tending toward abstraction and degeneracy, came to take prominence.
