The Durham Divas, a group of senior African American cheerleaders in Durham, North Carolina, got together in the early 2000s after 74-year-old Louise Gooche beat colon cancer, then decided to live her dream and tick an item off her bucket list by starting a cheerleading squad. Today, they’re a team with 10+ female senior cheerleaders and at least one man, all who compete together in the annual N.C. Senior Games. They root for and support each other in both fitness (Gooche did her first splits at age 62) and life.
