Since I've got Gun Nut 3, I can now build good defenses at my settlements, so I'm now ready to start building up and populating some of the settlements I've left mostly bare up until now.
Taffington Boathouse, Starlight Drive-in, and Sanctuary all get prepped for settlers to start moving in (though I end up forgetting to make extra beds at Taffington), and Red Rocket gets a significant boost to its fortifications.
With all the exp this nets me, I also grab Science 3 and Armorer 3, then upgrade my companions' power armor. Of particular note is the Targeting HUD helmet mod, which--for some reason--applies to you even when its your companion wearing it. Very helpful for a build that does its best work at night.
...and now I suspect I'm going to need to add a line at the beginning of each video now that specifies why enemies are glowing red or I'll end up getting a million questions about it.
