To say that the NXT brand has seen better days is a bit of an under statement. Arguably the hottest minor league brand in the US in 2015 saw a quality drop so steep Shane McMahon wouldnt even jump off of it. The brand that set the stage for the new Women's revolution and gave us the likes of American Alpha and Kevin Owens saw a talent purge in 2016 the likes of which WWE hasnt perpetrated since Vince bought out the territories in the 1980s. What was left wasnt “bad”, but it left very little to build off of going into 2017. Bobby Roode, Kassius Ohno, and Ember Moon are doing fine; but with the recent call ups of Samoa Joe and Nakamura, WWE is leaving NXT in a poor state going into the Summer.
Compare that to the main roster, where even with the influx of talent being brought up from the Brand Split, the roster still seems to suffer from being stale overall. How many times are we gonna see Kevin Owens vs Sami Zayn have “one more match”? My point is, there are numerous talents on the main roster doing nothing more than filling a spot. So why not have them fill a spots in developmental? Its not the first time this has happened. Cesaro re-invented himself in the early years of NXT, while Tyson Kidd started to flesh out his character before Samoa Joe made him do his best Dynamite Kid impersonation.
