While the farmer's away, the rats will play. Unfortunately, while I was dealing with tendon drama, the rats were helping themselves to our field of corn. Despite the warnings of nurse Rachel, I made my way down the hill to harvest what I could before the rats got it all. This isn't sweet corn; it's a local grain corn. I don't even bother with sweet corn anymore. Grain corn is the survival corn… provided you can get to it before the rats do. The ears aren't as big as I would like, but the pollination went well, obviously, since we have very few skipped kernels. This core needed a lot more fertilization during its establishment phase. Next time, I'll give it more care. At least I now have lots of seed for the future. Much more than I started with! I just couldn't bring myself to poison the rats. Too many possible unintended consequences.
