  • [ – ] GeekWisdom reply What you said about the importance of getting shouted out by the bigger channels on YouTube is completely true. I was barely registering on the YT radar - until I got shouted out by two moderately big channels (for that time period). But what I found out is that if your channel doesn't live up to the hype, people may stay subscribed to your channel, but don't watch the videos. I hope monetization doesn't happen here for a long while too. It really changes the whole atmosphere for the creators.
    • Y2JayDoesAsia parent reply Yeah in the end views really do trump subscribers. I had the same thing when I did wrestling videos. Had a channel of about 5,000 shout me out (I had about 100) And I gained like 2 or 3 hundred subs but in the end I lost interest in wrestling, didn't make many videos, the ones I did make were rubbish, and they stay subbed but never watched.
  • [ – ] theoldsparrow reply Another great video. Me personally I just like to watch videos and have no interest in making it big. I would like to release some vlogs every now and then when something cool happens. More of a vlog scrapbook. It does seem like a majority of people are trying to make it big rather than have fun with it but there's many more people that likes to watch. Keep up the great work, Y2Jay. :)
    • [ – ] Y2JayDoesAsia parent reply I actually "made travel videos" for 4 years before I "made travel videos for youtube". I used a camcorder and cellphone to document my travels abroad to China and Singapore over 4 years, one day knowing I would do something with the video footage, but not sure what. Ie- one option was make 1 big long doccumentary. Eventually I decided the best option was make short travel vlogs. Part of that decision came from the fact I used to do WWE talk videos on my old Youtube channel and WWE's product has been going downhill for years, and it's at the point now I only watch a few big shows per year. With such little interest, I can't can't make wrestling videos anymore. So that void is kind've what gave birth to my aspirations of creating a travel channel. Would I like to make it big one day, yes of course, but everybody that makes it big, busts thier ass for years building a community first, so that's what my focus is on. It's why I won't be starting a patreon anytime soon :) To me the audience ...moreengagement at these early stages is far more important than money. I do immensely appreciate your tips though :) I pay it forward though, I give tips to other Vidme people :)
      • [ – ] theoldsparrow parent reply That's exactly the kind of stuff that should be posted. The videos you enjoy making is more likely to be enjoyed by others. Travel vlogs are interesting because for the viewer it's like a small vacation to see a different part of the world and enjoy the exoticism of it all. I got into your channel because of a random shared interest of archery but I've liked everything I've watched of yours and picked up a few bits of knowledge from it too. I don't begrudge anyone for wanting to make it big but it has to come from a place that's genuinely care for the videos which I think you do. I respect that. :D
        • [ – ] Y2JayDoesAsia parent reply I get that feeling when I watch Funforlouis' channel, it's the chance to see something abroad. The thing is though, he's got a massive audience and brand deals and ad revenue so his channel can pay for itself. A tiny channel like mine, I have to have something that I can show the viewers that's not international travel (I can afford to go abroad once per year), which is why my channel is "adventure" too. that's why you see "activities" on my channel too, like archery, quadbiking, hiking, fishing, swimming etc. In the future there will be hunting, skiiing, weightlifting, and downhill mountainbiking. A brand new mountainbike park with chairlifts just opened in my city.
          • [ – ] theoldsparrow parent reply All of that does sound really fun. I look forward to seeing it. :)
            • [ – ] Y2JayDoesAsia parent reply In the next video I have a roadtrip to Hanmer Springs animal park, and I am sitting at a picnic table and a bunch of sparrows come along and want food, so I'm gonna say "there's theoldsparrow!" in the vid.
