  • [ – ] ExcalibursZone reply My mom lives within mile of my house so I'm considering walking to her house and back on most days. So I'm going to start off with the 1.5 miles round trip each time. Unfortunately, there are not many sidewalks around my area except on very busy streets. I think this is a good distance to start off and as I build up my endurance and get my shins back into shape (shin splints) I'll increase my walking distance. Keep it up, man :)
    • [ – ] WalkingForWeightLoss parent reply I hope it works out for you. If you feel there's any risk to your safety please consider getting some lights to affix to yourself or a jacket that has refelctive strips. Have you seen how I have a light affixed to my walking hat?
      • [ – ] ExcalibursZone parent reply There is always risk when you have to walk on the street, even off to the side of the street, in a neighborhood without sidewalks. I refuse to walk at night because there aren't even streetlights in my neighborhood. during the day is pretty safe, but at night or early morning, it's a death trap usually. I walked once with a strobing light and reflective belt along with the reflective safety material on my son's stroller (at the time). I was petrified and that was just going around the block in a relatively quiet neighborhood. So the only safe times to walk are when the sun is up or on Halloween. People do not pay attention to bicyclists or pedestrians around here. At all. It makes me miss my home town where there were sidewalks everywhere.
        • [ – ] WalkingForWeightLoss parent reply Today on my walk I saw people in their neighborhood put up to warn them to slow down and watch for kids. Like one of these Perhaps if you reach out to neighbors and local law enforcement and/or elected officials they might support you.
          • [ – ] ExcalibursZone parent reply That would be nice and something to put in, but when residents routinely do 40 in a 25 up and down the main road, I don't think they'd pay attention to these. People around here just don't care and that's both sad and scary.
            • [ – ] WalkingForWeightLoss parent reply Please be careful. I've also contemplated some way to affix a mirror to a hat but haven't had time yet to invest in the idea. One worry would be sun glare in eyes.
              • ExcalibursZone parent reply They actually have sunglasses that have reflective areas in the peripheral vision area. Though, the last time I saw those was in the 80's heh :)
