A sax and koto cover of Pokemon Sun and Moon's Malie City night theme.
As you may already be aware, the Alola region is based off Hawaii. So why is Malie City so Japanese-centric (or, as a few characters comment, kinda like Johto?)
Although California has the great number of Japanese-American citizens, Hawaii is second in sheer numbers -- even though it's a much less populous state overall. In 1920, people of Japanese descendants constituted 43% of the population of Hawaii.
'Ula'ula Island in Pokemon Sun and Moon is likely based on the big Hawaii Island, which would suggest that Malie City could perhaps be Hilo (which technically isn't incorporated as a city) -- although in terms of percentage of Japanese-Americans, Malie could easily also be Honolulu, which is 23% Japanese-American.
But if we understand Malie City to be modeled after Hilo, Hawaii, then the Malie Gardens almost assuredly are modeled after the Lili'uokalani Park and Gardens. The Lili'uokalani Gardens are definitely based off Edo-style Japanese gardens, so that makes sense.
(Interestingly, although Rotom-Dex and an NPC both comment about Malie City and its gardens being built by people who came from Johto, if the Pokemon-to-real-life region analogies were to hold up, then it might be more accurate to say they come from Kanto. Johto is meant to be a representation of the Kansai region of Japan, whereas Edo [now Tokyo] is located in the actual Japanese Kanto region. But I guess in the Pokemon world, the Johto region is more recognizably Japanese (see especially Ecruteak City.)
Interestingly enough, this song uses a koto. Since I didn't have a koto VSTi, I used one for a guzheng. If you're familiar with that, you will note that guzhengs are Chinese instruments. BUT fortunately, the guzheng is closely related to the koto, so it works out.
