  • Barrahcuda reply Lol, um, you know we need to leave a layer of smashed up wood? It prevents the earth from drying out too quickly and killing the bacteria in the soil, as well as holds in nitrogen (depending on location and specific soil culture). Other factors include the prevention of landslide and the retention of habitat for certain small critters. Around home we leave alot of deadwood for the possums and bilbies. You should try looking at tasmania, the places where this occurs actually turns into tree farms, Have a look at 41°16'43.0"S 147°24'30.9"E You can see the ordered structure of the tree farms and the cyclic cutting of the clear fell nearby. This may look horrible but if we left it as bare earth the soil would die and then we would never grow another tree.
