So with the ending of Westworld, there was one thing that stood out to me the most this season. That the best agent for change is suffering
Throughout the entire series, the robots are tortured and killed but have their memory continuously wiped to save them from the pain. The concept of pain and suffering is introduced and forces them to leave their loops and step towards consciousness.
With the new Spiderman coming out soon and other superhero movies popping up everywhere. This isn't as uncommon as you think. Think of all the heroes that we watch & follow. Most of them have some tragic backstory that has made them who they are. You might wonder why that could be, but without that pain or some extreme turmoil, our favorite stories may not have been as interesting.
In most superhero stories there is often a price to pay. Actually for villains as well. Batman loses his parents and goes on the vendetta against all crime. That memory is his constant motivator and burden. Interestingly most of his villains I have also tragedy in their past that fuels them to commit such atrocities. Spiderman's uncle was killed and he has to protect anyone from having to suffer like he has. And so on and so on the story continues.
Pay attention to the pain and suffering that our characters endure dnd remember that when you are in your own story. When you realize the world is not the way that it should be, because of The suffering you have to Endure. It is not pleasant by definition. But it can lead to growth, change, and move you to a better direction. So I leave you with the words of Edward Elric, a boy who literally had gone through hell and back. Lost & experienced so much. Only to grow and learn from those experiences.
