Blue exorcist is back, for season two. THE Fiery son of Satan is back to kick his pops ass. Once again with his blazing blue flames & burning sword. Which got me to thinking about abilities and powers and how they fit into storytelling. Often times the power a character has, reflects their personality and their overall effect on the story.
For instance with Rin the Blue exorcist and his power of fire. That says a lot about him even if you don't fully know the story. Because you've seen characters with similar traits. Presents fire is one of the main basic elements. Depending on your background you've heard of fire earth wind and water, or any the east it's fire earth water meadow and the lightning. A primal thing, a primal ability. Fire can be warm and represent lights and purification which is often used to for off monsters and demons. It's also a symbolizes rebirth, most notable in the phoenix rising back from the ashes. But on the other side, I can also be wild, destructive, and unpredictable.
That back-and-forth can be seen a lot of the characters who are warm and caring for their friends or their comrades. But don't piss them off or they're likely to unleash hellfire on whatever unlucky bastard in their path. Fire is usually attached to weapons fire arrows especially fire swords once again destroy evil or to show its uniqueness. When he think about it like the fire was humanities first line of the fence against the darkness and dangerous animals.
So what better substance to add to your weapons? Fire almost goes against everything. Of course, you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.
But besides being the Blue exorcist, Rin's signature weapon, it definitely highlights his personality traits. A lot of fire users are known to be very passionate, hotheaded or may even have bad tempers. A lot of art and animation depict fire users with red hair, have you ever heard the phrase fiery redhead, they are not putting that to rest.
