If you're one of those people who feel locked into one position of a scale and don't feel confident in moving it elsewhere on the neck then these insights should help you. This week I outline 3 approaches to learning and applying other positions of the Pentatonic or Blues scale. The ideas and concepts covered are applicable to learning any position of any scale. 1. Looking for equivalences between pairs of strings. 2. Looking for what's unique or interesting in the new shape. 3. Finding the associated chords. Learning to improvise on the guitar is one of the most creative and rewarding things that you can do. The big challenge for a beginner though, is to bridge the gap between just playing scales and playing the music that is actually inside of you. Making music with the pentatonic scale is a great way to start because it is one of the fundamental building blocks of pretty much any musical style and can be used as a stepping stone to develop a full musical vocabulary.
