I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. So let's play those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...

Pinball is an age-old game that has seen countless adaptations over the years. Indeed, there exist countless video game versions of pinball that you can you go out and play right now. However, almost all pinball adaptations take the approach of trying to virtualize a real pinball machine. Flipnic is a pinball video game that says "to hell" with reality.
The basic framework of all pinball games involves arranging a series of obstacles in rectangular field area and giving players two bumpers at the bottom of the machine to hit the ball. Variations on this framework exist, sure, but overall most pinball games follow this basic structure. Flipnic is a pinball game that specifically eschews this traditional setup. In Flipnic, you play through a series of pinball machines that would be impossible to create in real life. They consist of vast sprawling arenas with paddles strewn about. Your ball will go through waterfalls and over cliffs, through tunnels and into separate rooms. Indeed, the creators of Flipnic specifically wanted to create pinball "machines" that would simply be impossible to create in the real world.
One of the neat things about Flipnic is that there is an insane amount of variety in the types of pinball "machines" to play through. Some levels devolve pinball into a computerized, 8-bit arena. Others place you in the belly of a large mechanical machine. Others take place along jungle cliffs and waterfalls. There really is not end to the variety in the types of machines you'll encounter.
Flipnic is a very inventive and unique take on pinball. This may not be the game for pinball purists, as it eschews so many pinball conventions, but for fans of the genre who are excited for something new or for more casual players, this is a very neat idea for a game. That said, I personally have never been that into pinball and though Flipnic is very inventive, at the end of the day the core mechanic of it is still using some bumpers to knock a ball around. So if you're not a pinball fan, I don't think this game will suddenly convert you. But even if you are only casually interested, I think this game is still worth a shot!
➙ Must You Play It?
A pinball game with a huge variety of inventive and creative pinball "machines" that really could never exist in the real world. If pinball isn't your thing I don't think this game will convert you, but for people looking for a unique take on pinball, look no further.
