I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, fan of retro games, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EACH of the video games in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, and are not meant to be definitive, in depth reviews; this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey itself. From Mario games to the Halo series, from arcade games to Commodore 64, PC games to the NES and Sega Genesis, Playstation to the Xbox, let's play those classic retro games that we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...
Developer(s) Nintendo EAD
Platform(s) Nintendo 64
Whether you're looking to do some racing, some snowboarding tricks, or just looking for a casual ride down a mountain, 1080 Snowboarding is a solid game that will likely satisfy your itch. Like most Nintendo developed games, the quality here is clear. For its time, 1080 Snowboarding was an award winning game that garnered much acclaim, and though it has aged, it does hold up quite well.
At its core, really, 1080 Snowboarding holds up well because of tight controls and solid gameplay. The game allows you to choose from a variety of snowboarders, each with their own proficiencies, and then to pick a snowboard, also with its own mechanics. Then its off to the hills, to board your way down. On the way down you'll encounter caverns, trees, and jumps. If you're racing, its all about speed, but if you're doing a trick run, the aim is to do tricks, much in the same way you would in a Tony Hawk game.
Landing you board to maintain your speed after a jump felt a bit like Excitebike to me. Though I honestly was not great at it. Nonetheless, I had fun with this one and it feels like the kind of game I could see people still enjoying today, especially with friends. If you've got some time and even a passing interest in racing or snowboarding, check this one out. You may be pleasantly surprised!
➙ Must You Play It?
This game is a solid N64 game which should appeal both to casual gamers and to more serious fans of the snowboarding genre. The game features unique racing mechanics true to its snowboarding theme, and all in all just played like a very well made game. Certainly worth a try if you're looking for a game to try with a friend.
