I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game reviews are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. Let's try out those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...
Platform(s) PlayStation 3
Genre(s) Adventure, Artistic
Have you ever fantasized about being a flower? I gotta imagine that few people would ever say yes to that question. I mean, c'mon, they're flowers, how interesting can a game about them be?! Well, I've gotta say, Flower is a game that defies expectations a bit.
So first off, there is a story going on here. Yeah. This game involves you entering the dreams (or maybe memories) of different flowers, and then taking control of pedals that are blowing in the wind, that have the power to wake up other flowers. The levels start off in beautiful country settings and gradually grow more urban as you work your way through the game. From meadows to canyons, farmhouses to sky scrappers, Flower actually contains a variety of environments to explore.
The gameplay itself is not hard. Flower is not one of those games that takes much skill to beat. Really anyone can beat it. It's not supposed to be a hard game. It's supposed to be an experience. The developer of the game tried to create something more akin to art than to a traditional video game, and in this way, he succeeded. Flower feels very unique, and is not a game about seeing how far you can get or how quickly you can beat it, but in exploring your environment and taking in the scenery.
I know this all sounds a little odd. And the truth is if you've never tried Flower, you probably don't exactly understand what I'm talking about. But I think this game is unique and, in its own way, pretty groundbreaking. And for these reasons I think that this is a game that most people should try before they die.
➙ Must You Play It?
One of the most unique interpretations of the idea of a "video game" that I've ever played. It's not necessarily the best gameplay experience you will ever have and it might not be for everyone but it is a beautiful game that, in a weird way, makes you think. A game most of us should try out at some point.
