Clicking a series of electronic switches in accordance to on screen colors has never felt so bad ass!

I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game review parts are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. So let's play those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...
Guitar Hero 2
Platform(s) PlayStation 2, Xbox 360
Genre(s) Music, Rhythm
Guitar Hero 2 was a massive hit when it came out. Not only was Guitar Hero as a series a unique and refreshing take on musical video games, but it was done with such care and detail that there's really nothing negative you can say about this game. Sure, staring at the colored notes forever scrolling towards you can occasionally give you a sense of vertigo, and yes, you're not "really" playing any of these songs, but the gameplay is intuitive and challenging, the songs are amazing, and the game brims with attitude. This is a game that gamers and non-gamers alike can enjoy.
The whole premise of Guitar Hero 2 is that you're working your way along a tour, playing classic rock songs as you go. The awesome part about this game is you get to play real songs, and so you can live your fantasy of being a musician, even if (like me) you never thought you had this fantasy. There's something empowering about playing a badass rock tune, even if you know deep down you're not REALLY playing it.
If you're looking to try this game out these days, you'll have to hit up your local retro gaming shop to pick up a guitar or two. Be sure to get one that is compatible with Guitar Hero because (as I learned, sadly) Rockband guitars do not work with Guitar Hero. But otherwise, whoever you are, if you've never tried this game before I definitely recommend it. If nothing else it's one of the more unique and creative games to have stormed the home market in the last few decades. So go get a massive guitar-shaped controller, and enjoy!
➙ Must You Play It?
Guitar Hero 2 is an iconic and stellar game from a franchise that was revolutionary when it came out. Though the plastic controllers can be annoying to get a hold of these days, the game is relatively timeless, and it's still fun to click your way through a modern rock ballad. Whether you're a gamer or not, I think almost anyone can find something to enjoy here so give this one a shot!
