I'm Gaming Jay: Youtube gamer, let's player, retrogaming fan, and determined optimist... Join me in this series while I try out EVERY game in the book 1001 VIDEO GAMES YOU MUST PLAY BEFORE YOU DIE, before I die. The game review for each game will focus on the question of whether you MUST play this game before you die. But to be honest, the game reviews are just for fun, this series is more about the YouTube gamer journey. Let's try out those classic retro games we grew up with, have fond memories of, or heard of but never got a chance to try! And with that said, the game review for today is...
Developer(s) Polys Entertainment
Genre(s) Racing, Simulation
Gran Turismo is basically a wish-fulfillment game for anyone out there who loves cars. Unlike most other racers, Gran Turismo places much more emphasis on accurate automobile simulation than on unrealistic but "fun" physics. I say "fun" because I don't mean to imply that Gran Turismo isn't fun. Quite the contrary. It's just that it bucks the trend of racing games having completely unrealistic physics and really tries to simulate what it's like to be a real race car driver.
Because of its emphasis on Gran Turismo, it really does feel like you're driving a car in this game. And again, that's weird to say, because you may be thinking, "Well EVERY racing game FEELS like you're driving a car." But Gran Turismo is different. In my play through, I started off with a used Toyota Corolla (yup, it's such an accurate simulation it even starts you off with the budget of a poor college student buying their first car). In my first race, I was expecting to buzz along the track, drift around corners, and cruise my way to an easy win. After all, I've placed countless racers in my day. But the second the race started, my car felt like it had heft to it. Instead of exploding off the starting line it accelerated, like a car does. Around turns, the car felt like it had real weight to it, and when I bumped into other cars I almost felt the impact. Now whether this sounds like your type of racing game or not, you gotta admit, that's kinda cool!
In line with the emphasis on simulation, Gran Turismo features countless customization options, allowing you to modify and change almost any element of your car and thereby change your driving experience. I can safely say that if I was a car nut, this would have been my game growing up! But then, I'm not a car not really. And so from that perspective though I think the customization options are cool, I would probably not bother to do too much playing around with them myself.
All in all, Gran Turismo is a unique racing game that really changed the way that racing games were made. It not only tried to simulate the experience of driving real cars but it largely succeeded! And really, it is a very fun game. So whether or not you're obsessed with cars, I think this game is a great title and one worth trying out!
