This week i'm doing something totally different than my usual shredfests. I had this request to do Yasunori Mitsuda's beautiful "Bonds of Sea and Fire" theme from Xenogears; Requested by my good friend and supporter Erika aka Chatia12! This theme is all about being super mellowed out and has a very positive and chill vibe. Normally this kind of thing is the least-metal concept out there, but I actually really dig when bands combine some major progressions and uplifting melodies in their metal such as bands like Equilibrium and Agalloch. This arrangement is all about those arppeggiated pizzicato strings and I decided that I didn't want to lose those in my cover, so I slapped them super delicately and also played the part on guitar to add my own flare to it. I wanted to start the song as chill as I possibly could so I busted out the acoustic guitar and played the pizzicato parts but a bit more openly and acoustic-guitar-y. This actually turned out 100x more rad than I expected. They harmonize so dissonantly but in such a pleasant way as well. When the chorus kicks in, so does the metals! I did some beefy open chord riffage and let the guitars sing the melodies over them. I did what I could to get the drums a bit more rockin' but I used as much restraint as I could so the arrangement could maintain its chillness. Overall I'm super happy with how this cover turned out, It was a fun challenge to work on such a chill track and see how far I could take it without losing it's original vibe (hopefully). Thanks for watching! ➤ The original "Bonds of Sea and Fire" theme from the game "Xenogears" was composed by Yasunori Mitsuda ➤ Thank you to aulddragon for the game footage!
